Gift cards are the most popular reward type in referral programs. They’re flexible, easy to fulfill, and feel like free money to the person who gets one. But most businesses stop at “pick a dollar amount and go.” The bigger question is how you frame the gift card, who it’s really for, and whether you should use your own or a third-party option. Here’s how to make that call.
What referral gift cards are (and aren’t)
Referral gift cards are any gift cards used as a reward in a referral program. They can go to the advocate who makes the referral, the referred friend who becomes a new customer, or both. They’re one way to encourage word-of-mouth sharing from existing customers or employees, and motivate newly referred customers to buy from you.
Here’s an example from Weed Man:
Why gift cards work as referral rewards
Gift cards offer several advantages as a referral incentive:
- Easy to reward and manage, especially if your referral software integrates with a gift card provider like Tango
- Instant delivery since they’re a digital reward
- They feel like free money (and practically are, since the recipient would likely have spent their own money on something they enjoy)
- More secure and easier to send than cash
- Choice, if you use a gift card menu like Tango’s (customers can pick the reward they actually want)
Your own gift cards vs. third-party: how to choose
There are two types of referral gift cards, and the right choice depends on your business model.
Your own gift cards award store credits to your business. They tie the reward back to you and encourage repeat purchases. Use them when:
- You expect advocates to purchase frequently (apparel, beauty, ecommerce)
- You want to tie the reward back to your business to inspire loyalty
- You’re incentivizing the referred friend to make their first purchase
.
Third-party gift cards are gift cards to other, non-competing businesses your customers enjoy. They let referrers pick their own reward for a personalized experience. Use them when:
- You sell something people won’t purchase again for several years (solar, mattresses, furniture), so credits toward your own products don’t make sense
- You’re running a B2B referral program and want to reward the individual making the referral (they aren’t the one paying for your product, so discounts may not land)
- You want to give customers a choice of rewards in a way that’s easy to maintain (with Referral Rock’s third-party gift card option, customers can choose their preferred type of gift card from Tango’s menu based on their country.)
- You’re running an employee referral program and need a way to reward employees for referrals
In our experience, the industries that use third-party gift cards most often are B2B and SaaS. Financial services, insurance, home services, and education are other common fits.
Here at Referral Rock, we looked at anonymized data from 500+ referral programs and found that gift cards were the most common reward type. Along with cash, they’re also the best-performing rewards because the recipient can choose how to use them.
How referral software handles gift cards
Referral software automates the whole process. It creates unique referral links for every customer or employee. Whenever a referred friend follows the link and makes a purchase, the system credits it to the person who referred them and instantly issues the gift card reward to the advocate, the referred friend, or both.
Most referral software lets you reward with your own gift cards. But only select options can handle third-party gift cards and give participants a choice from a menu.
How Referral Rock makes gift card rewards easy
Referral Rock integrates with Tango to offer third-party gift cards, letting you give customers and employees an instant choice of rewards. You can also set up your own gift cards if you prefer that route.
Setting up your own gift cards:
Use Referral Rock’s Reward Builder to configure gift card rewards:
- Choose “Coupons” and select “Fixed Amount”
- Enter the value of the gift card you want to give out
- Decide when the gift card gets awarded (when the referral is qualified or approved)
Setting up third-party gift cards with Tango:
(You’ll need the Tango integration enabled and a Professional+ or Engage+ plan.)
- Create a Tango account inside of Referral Rock
- Select “Gift Cards” and “Fixed Amount”
- Enter the amount of the gift card you’d like to award
- Decide when the gift card gets awarded (when the referral is qualified or approved)
- Pick the different gift cards you want customers to select from through Tango
Prepay for any types of gift cards by funding your account. Customers can choose and access a gift card instantly when the referral reward is earned. There’s no additional fee to use Tango, you just pay for the gift cards you want to award.
Tango offers over 100 gift card options across food, apparel, beauty, entertainment, and more. Many currencies are available to serve businesses and customers in several countries. Plus, Tango offers cash-equivalent gift cards from Visa and MasterCard, as well as charitable donation options.
When Referral Rock detects that a customer’s referral is successful, the customer gets a Tango Reward Link via email. They select their gift card, receive it instantly, and can redeem it right away.
Gift card tips most programs miss
We’ve helped 1,000+ companies grow through referral programs, and many have used gift cards as rewards. Here’s what we’ve learned.
Frame it as a gift for the friend, not a payout for the referrer. Most programs focus entirely on what the advocate earns. But the real magic is in how the referrer feels when they share. If the messaging just says “earn a $25 gift card,” it feels transactional. The referrer feels like they’re monetizing their relationship. Flip it: frame the referral as a gift the advocate is giving their friend. “Give your friend $25 off” changes the dynamic completely. It’s not an ask, it’s a favor. People share more when it feels generous, not calculated.
Give the referred friend a gift card to your own business. If you’re rewarding the friend for purchasing, tie it back to you. A gift card to your own business motivates that first purchase and keeps the relationship going. Most businesses that reward the referred friend give money toward that first purchase, and for good reason.
Use third-party gift cards for advocate rewards. Most clients who use third-party gift cards use them for advocate rewards, not friend rewards. This makes sense. The advocate already buys from you. Give them something they wouldn’t buy themselves.
Consider tiered rewards to keep referrals rolling. A tiered program lets customers earn gift cards of increasing value as they hit different referral milestones. For instance, a $10 gift card for one referral, $25 for three referrals, and $50 for ten referrals. This isn’t a one-time campaign. It’s a reason to keep sharing over time, which is how the best programs work. They’re built into ongoing operations, not launched and forgotten.
Match gift card value to referral value. You might set up different gift card amounts depending on the value of the referred friend’s purchase. For example, $50 for a single HVAC system install or $100 for a full system install. This keeps the reward proportional and sustainable.
Make it a gift, not a transaction
The gift card itself is just the mechanic. What makes it work is the framing. When a customer shares your referral program and their friend gets a gift card too, that’s not a transaction. It’s a favor between friends. Pick the gift card type that fits your business, automate the fulfillment so it’s instant, and frame every piece of messaging around what the friend receives. That’s what turns a reward into a reason to share.
