Gift card code formats and why they matter

Gift card codes guard real monetary value, so the format is worth thinking through. A 16-character code split into four groups, like the formatted preset, makes guessing impractical because the number of possible combinations is enormous. Grouping the characters with hyphens also makes codes easier for customers to type accurately from a printed card or receipt.

When codes will be read over the phone or keyed in from handwriting, the unambiguous character set removes 0, O, 1, I, and L. Those characters look similar enough to cause mix-ups, and a customer who misreads one letter ends up with a code that does not work. Dropping the ambiguous characters keeps redemption smooth without affecting the security of the code.
