So, what is word of mouth as a channel?

Successful businesses often rely on many different marketing channels. Paid ads, content marketing, social media, and email marketing are among the most popular.  But word of mouth is never mentioned as a channel.  Why is that?

Our vision for word of mouth as a channel (WOMaaC) is to bring together marketing techniques that influence word of mouth.  

All of these marketing techniques are often confusing to marketers as they are seen as distinctly different, yet are fundamentally the same thing.  Such as:

At the end of the day, they are all relationship-based where the attribution of activities (leads, customers, site visits) is linked to an individual (referrer, customer, ambassador). 

If there is alignment with all of these disparate marketing techniques, we can raise awareness for all and lessen the confusion for marketers under the category of word of mouth as a channel.

Doesn't word of mouth happen by itself?

Yes, organic word of mouth does just happen, and it’s wonderful and should be celebrated, but it’s tough to count on.

To drive organic word of mouth, one needs to consider other areas of the business that depends on more than just marketing.

When asked how a business can get more word of mouth, the typical response is, “Just do good work and hope people refer their friends.”

Hope is not a strategy. An increase in word of mouth can be orchestrated.

 

How does this differ from word of mouth marketing?

Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) is a confusing term. Wikipedia defines the term quite broadly and across multiple areas outside of a marketer’s control.

We view word of mouth as a channel (WOMaaC) in- line with Wikipedia’s definition of “Direct WOMM” where WOMM has higher levels of control (influence).

This allows WOMaaC to be inclusive of many marketing techniques that can now be grouped together based on their ability to influence word of mouth.
